Protecting Your Sphynx This Summer
Summer brings unique challenges for a Sphynx's hairless, fine peach fuzz down, wrinkled skin. It's crucial to adapt their grooming routine to prevent overheating while protecting their skin from the sun. Schedule outdoor exercise for early morning or evening when pavement temperatures are lower, and always provide shade and fresh water.
To Shave or Not to Shave?
For a Sphynx with a hairless, fine peach fuzz down, wrinkled skin, a shorter summer trim is a sensible and safe option. Unlike double-coated breeds, trimming will not damage the coat structure or interfere with natural temperature regulation. Regular clipping every 4–6 weeks during summer keeps the coat at a manageable, breathable length. Ask your groomer for a "summer cut" that takes the coat down by about a third — enough to feel lighter without exposing the skin completely to sunburn risk.

Summer Bathing Frequency
In summer, aim to bathe your Sphynx every 4–6 weeks. After outdoor adventures, a quick rinse with plain water removes grass pollen, dirt, and pesticide residue that can irritate skin when the coat is warm and pores are open. Always ensure the coat is fully dry before letting them outside in direct sun to prevent hot-spot formation under a wet coat.
Paw and Skin Protection
Asphalt and concrete can reach 140°F (60°C) on a hot summer day — hot enough to cause serious paw pad burns within 60 seconds. Before any walk, press the back of your hand to the pavement for 7 seconds; if it's uncomfortable for you, it's unsafe for your Sphynx. Check paw pads after every outing for redness, cracking, or blistering. Light-colored and thin-coated dogs like some Sphynxs are at real risk of sunburn on exposed areas like the nose, ear tips, and belly — apply a pet-safe SPF 30+ sunscreen to these areas before extended sun exposure. Signs of Heat Stress to Watch For
Heat stress in dogs escalates quickly from discomfort to a life-threatening emergency. Early signs include excessive panting with a wide, flat tongue, thick ropey drooling, and restlessness. If your Sphynx becomes lethargic, vomits, or their gums turn pale or brick red, treat it as an emergency and get to a vet immediately. Regularly parting your Sphynx's coat after exercise to check for hot, red skin under the fur is a fast early-warning check. Immediate cooling steps include moving to shade, applying cool (not ice cold) water to the paws, groin, and neck, and offering small sips of water — never force water on a heat-stressed dog.
