A coat structure consisting of two distinct layers: a dense, soft undercoat that provides insulation, and a coarser outer layer of guard hairs that repels water, dirt, and UV rays. Double coats are found in breeds historically developed for outdoor or cold-climate work.
Understanding double coats is critical because they should never be shaved. The two layers work together as a natural thermoregulation system — removing the undercoat through shaving can permanently damage the coat's ability to regrow correctly, a condition known as Post-Clipping Alopecia.
During shedding season, use an undercoat rake followed by a high-velocity dryer to 'blow out' the dead undercoat. This is significantly more effective than brushing alone.
