A grooming tool with long, rounded metal teeth spaced to penetrate through the outer guard coat and directly reach the dense undercoat layer. Undercoat rakes are used to pull out large volumes of dead undercoat in double-coated breeds, especially during seasonal shedding periods.
The undercoat rake is one of the highest-impact tools for reducing shedding in heavy-shedding breeds. Using one correctly during coat-blow season can remove the equivalent of several handfuls of undercoat in a single session, which would otherwise shed across your home over several weeks.
Work through the coat in the direction of growth with long, sweeping strokes. Check your progress by parting the coat — you should be able to see clean, separate guard hairs with no clumped undercoat between them.
