Tibetan Terrier
The Tibetan Terrier is not a true terrier but a medium-sized companion breed from the high plateaus of Tibet, bred by monks as good luck dogs and herders. The double coat is extraordinary: a long, fine, flat or wavy outer coat overlies a dense, soft, woolly undercoat. The combination provides insulation against extreme cold but requires dedicated grooming to prevent matting in the dense undercoat.

Full-length outer coat allowed to grow in its natural state with the face fall covering the eyes (as in the breed standard). Requires daily brushing.

Expert Advice
Care Tips
- The woolly undercoat is the matting risk — brush down to the skin with a pin brush, then confirm with a wide-tooth comb.
- The face fall (hair covering the eyes) is a breed characteristic — it does not impair vision and should not be trimmed in show dogs.
- Brush at minimum every other day; the combination of fine outer coat and woolly undercoat creates mats quickly when brushing is skipped.
- The coat during adolescence (approximately 9-18 months) transitions from puppy to adult texture — this is the highest-risk period for severe matting.
- Never shave the double coat — it disrupts thermal regulation and the coat may not grow back with the correct texture.
- The Tibetan Terrier's broad, flat, snowshoe-like feet have significant hair between the toes — trim this hair regularly for traction and hygiene.
