The Samoyed is a striking Arctic working breed renowned for its thick, gleaming white double coat and the characteristic 'Sammy smile' — a permanently upturned mouth corner that prevents ice from forming on the lips in extreme cold. Their abundant, pure-white coat is one of the most demanding maintenance challenges in the dog world, requiring extensive brushing, particularly during their twice-yearly shedding events when they shed their entire undercoat in enormous quantities. Samoyeds are sometimes called 'Sammies' and their shed fur has historically been spun into yarn.

Natural Breed Trim
The coat is maintained at natural full length with no clipping. Light scissor tidying around the feet, hocks, and anal area keeps the dog clean and tidy while preserving the breed's magnificent natural silhouette. The only acceptable style for show dogs.

De-Shedding Treatment
A specialized bath using de-shedding shampoo and conditioner followed by a high-velocity drying session that physically ejects the undercoat. During a seasonal blowout, a professional de-shedding treatment can remove the equivalent of a full dog's worth of undercoat in a single session.

Hygienic / Sanitary Trim
The coat is not cut down, but the feet are neatened, the sanitary area is trimmed for cleanliness, and any mats are removed. This is the standard maintenance groom for a Samoyed kept in full coat — no clipping of the body coat is done.

Care Tips
- Never shave a Samoyed — the double coat is essential to their temperature regulation in both heat and cold, and shaving can cause permanent coat damage including the inability to regrow the correct coat texture and color.
- During a seasonal blowout (spring and fall), daily brushing for 2–4 weeks is not optional — the undercoat sheds in large masses that will compress into solid felted mats within days if not removed daily.
- Use a wide-tooth metal comb to check all the way to the skin after brushing — a Samoyed's outer coat can look pristine while a dense mat is forming against the skin underneath, and this is the only reliable check.
- Invest in a high-velocity force dryer — it transforms bathing a Samoyed from a multi-hour ordeal into a manageable process by removing enormous quantities of undercoat during the drying phase and reducing total dry time significantly.
- The white coat stains easily from grass, soil, and paw contact — a whitening shampoo used at every bath and a quick paw rinse after outdoor time prevents the gradual yellowing that is very difficult to reverse once set.
