The Pomeranian is the smallest of the Spitz breeds — a spirited, alert, and often surprisingly bold personality contained within a lush, double-coated body. Their standout feature is a thick, abundant coat with a soft, dense undercoat supporting a harsh, straight outer coat that stands away from the body to create the breed's characteristic lion-like mane and plumed tail. Pomeranians shed moderately year-round and heavily twice yearly, and their coat is prone to a genetic condition called Black Skin Disease (Alopecia X) that can follow incorrect grooming or shaving.

The coat is maintained at its natural full length with light scissor tidying around the feet, face outline, and tail. The mane and body coat are not cut down — only the edges are tidied for a neat appearance. This is the preferred style for maintaining the breed's correct silhouette.
The body coat is clipped short while the mane around the neck and chest is left full, and the tail plume is maintained. This trim accentuates the Pomeranian's naturally lion-like proportions while making the body coat easier to maintain.
The entire coat is scissored to a uniform length of 1.5–2 inches and the face is rounded into a circular shape. A practical pet trim that reduces grooming time significantly while keeping the dog's fluffy appearance. Note: repeated heavy clipping can cause coat texture changes in this breed.
