Norwegian Elkhound

The Norwegian Elkhound is one of the oldest Northern European dog breeds, a sturdy, square-built Nordic spitz used for hunting elk in Scandinavian forests. Their remarkable grey double coat — a dense, soft undercoat beneath a thick, hard outer coat — provides complete weather protection in extreme conditions and sheds heavily twice yearly in dramatic coat blows. The coat should never be shaved, as it regulates body temperature in both heat and cold.
