Border Terrier
The Border Terrier is one of the most utilitarian of all terrier breeds — designed for a day's work in the rough borders of Scotland and England following horses over rugged terrain. Their double coat is unique: a harsh, close-lying outer coat over a dense, short undercoat that is remarkably easy to maintain relative to the breed's working heritage. The coat is hand-stripped twice yearly for show dogs, and while clipping softens the texture, Border Terriers are one of the few wiry breeds where a trimmed coat is largely acceptable even cosmetically.

Hand-Strip

Roll Coat (Continuous Stripping)
A small section of the coat is stripped at each grooming session rather than stripping the whole coat at once — this maintains the coat in a perpetual state of mid-growth for a consistently tidy appearance without the dramatic pre- and post-strip look.

The coat is trimmed with scissors or a stripping comb to neaten the outline and remove excess coat length. Not traditional but practical for pet owners who cannot commit to stripping — the coat will soften but remains manageable and the Border Terrier's character is unchanged.

- Hand-stripping is worth learning for Border Terrier owners — unlike most wiry terriers, the Border's coat strips relatively easily compared to a Schnauzer or Airedale, and the result is a dramatically better coat texture and color than clipping.
