Belgian Tervuren
The Belgian Tervuren is the most glamorous of the four Belgian Shepherd varieties, distinguished by its rich mahogany and black overlay double coat and abundant mane around the neck and chest. The medium-length outer coat is straight and abundant, with a dense, soft undercoat — the mane, chest frill, and breeches carry the heaviest coat and require the most grooming attention. The breed sheds moderately year-round with heavier seasonal coat blows.

Natural Tervuren Show Coat
The full coat maintained at its natural medium length with only the paws, hocks, and sanitary areas tidied. The mane and frill are brushed to maximum fullness — the correct show and breed-standard presentation.

Neatened Working Dog
A thorough bath and de-shed with light scissoring to tidy stray hairs around the ears, paws, and hocks. The mane length is preserved while overall neatness is improved.

Summer Tidy
The mane and body coat are thinned with thinning shears and the breeches shortened to reduce heat load in warm weather, while the characteristic coat structure and mahogany color are preserved.

De-Shedding Treatment
An intensive undercoat-removal session using de-shedding shampoo, high-velocity blow-out, and extended undercoat raking. Essential during the biannual seasonal coat blows.

Care Tips
- Brush the Belgian Tervuren's mane and chest frill at least 3 times per week — these are the areas that mat fastest due to the density of the undercoat beneath the long outer guard hairs.
- The breeches (long feathering on the upper rear legs) develop mats at the inner thigh where friction is constant; inspect and brush this area daily and use a metal comb as a final check after brushing.
- The Tervuren is an MDR1 (ABCB1) sensitive breed in common with other herding breeds — inform veterinarians when any drug therapy is prescribed, though this mutation does not affect standard grooming products.
- Never shave the double coat; both the undercoat insulation and the mahogany outer coat's UV protection are functionally important, and shaving can result in abnormal coat regrowth that permanently alters the rich coloring.
- Use thinning shears rather than straight scissors to blend any trimming in the mane or breeches — blunt scissor lines on the Tervuren's naturally flowing coat look unnatural and take months to grow out.
