The Appenzeller Sennenhund is the rarest of the four Swiss Mountain Dog breeds, a lively, energetic tricolored working dog with a short, dense, close-lying double coat. Their short coat is the easiest to maintain of any Swiss Sennenhund breed, requiring primarily de-shedding management and regular bathing. The glossy tricolor coat needs no trimming to retain its natural appearance.

- The Appenzeller's short, close-lying coat sheds year-round — a rubber curry brush or grooming mitt used in circular motions twice weekly collects loose hair before it distributes around the home.
- After outdoor work or hiking (the breed has high exercise requirements), run a damp cloth over the short coat to collect surface dust and debris rather than doing a full bath — the close coat dries quickly and is self-cleaning to a degree.
- Check between the paw pads after outdoor activity — though the coat is short, the active Appenzeller picks up seeds and debris in the inter-digital spaces that can cause irritation.
- Ear cleaning once per week prevents the wax buildup that can develop in this breed's medium-sized, folded ears.
