The Anatolian Shepherd is a powerful, independent Turkish livestock guardian breed that has protected flocks from wolves and bears for thousands of years. Their coat comes in two varieties: short (1-1.5 inch) and rough (2+ inch), both double-coated with a dense, thick undercoat that sheds heavily twice yearly. Care Tips
- Never shave an Anatolian Shepherd's double coat — the undercoat insulates from both heat and cold, and the outer coat protects against sun exposure on a dog that spends long hours working outdoors in all weather.
- During the biannual coat blow, brush daily with an undercoat rake — the volume of loose undercoat this breed produces is comparable to much larger breeds. Daily brushing for 3-4 weeks prevents undercoat matting against the skin.
- The rough-coat variety develops a fuller mane and feathering on the legs that needs brushing 2-3 times per week between professional appointments to prevent tangling.
- Anatolian Shepherds are independent livestock guardians and may resist handling from strangers — establish grooming routines from puppyhood to prevent resistance from becoming a challenge with this large, powerful breed.
- Check paws after outdoor work, particularly if the dog works rocky or thorny terrain — the breed's stoic nature means foot injuries are often not displayed, and regular inspection at grooming appointments catches problems early.
