Airedale Terrier
The Airedale Terrier is the largest of all terrier breeds — nicknamed the King of Terriers — and combines the tenacity of a working terrier with the athletic build of a sporting dog. Their hard, wiry, dense double coat is one of the most weather-resistant in the dog world, developed for the challenging conditions of Yorkshire where the breed originated. Correct Airedale coat maintenance requires hand-stripping to maintain the hard outer coat texture, though clipping is practical for pet dogs who are not shown.

Traditional Airedale Pattern
The body is hand-stripped or clipped short on the back and sides in a saddle pattern, with the tan leg furnishings blended to the correct length and the distinctive Airedale head profile maintained with scissoring. The beard and eyebrows are shaped to the breed standard.

Pet Clip
The body is clipped short all over with a medium-length blade, the beard and legs are tidied, and the head is shaped with scissors to maintain the Airedale's characteristic rectangular head profile. Practical for pet Airedales who are not shown.

Hand-Strip
Dead outer coat is removed by hand or stripping knife to maintain the correct harsh, flat-lying coat texture and rich tan-and-black coloring. Essential for show dogs; produces a dramatically harder, more weather-resistant coat than any clipped finish.

Care Tips
- Brush the beard and leg furnishings daily — the longer sections on an Airedale mat rapidly, particularly the beard which contacts food and water, and the inner thigh area which experiences friction.
- Airedales are prone to skin sensitivities and hot spots, especially in summer — check under the coat after outdoor activity in heat or humidity, as a damp undercoat against hot skin is the primary trigger.
- If you clip rather than hand-strip your Airedale, expect the coat texture to soften significantly after 2–3 clipping cycles — the hard, wiry outer coat becomes fluffier and less weather-resistant, but remains manageable for pet purposes.
- The Airedale's deep chest and beard make them particularly messy eaters and drinkers — wipe the beard dry after every meal to prevent the sour, musty odor that develops in a chronically damp beard.
- Schedule professional grooming appointments at least every 8–12 weeks; an Airedale left longer than 12 weeks without grooming will typically arrive significantly overgrown and matted in the furnishings, requiring extra time and cost.
