The Shiba Inu is Japan's most popular native breed, a spirited, fox-like dog with a plush undercoat and a harsh, straight outer coat. Twice a year the breed undergoes a dramatic coat blow where shedding intensifies dramatically for three to four weeks. The double coat must never be shaved, as it regulates body temperature in both heat and cold.

Expert Advice
Care Tips
- Never shave a Shiba Inu's double coat — the guard hairs and undercoat work together to regulate body temperature in both summer heat and winter cold. Shaving permanently disrupts this system and the coat may grow back with an abnormal texture.
- During the twice-yearly coat blow, brush your Shiba daily with a slicker brush followed by an undercoat rake. Skipping days during this period leads to matting at the skin.
- Shibas are notoriously resistant to grooming — desensitize puppies to handling of their paws, ears, and mouth from an early age to make adult grooming sessions manageable.
- The harsh outer coat naturally repels dirt; avoid bathing more than once every four to six weeks, as frequent bathing softens the guard hairs and reduces their self-cleaning properties.
- Use a wide-tooth metal comb as a final check after brushing — if the comb does not glide easily from skin to coat tip, there is still undercoat to remove.
