Care Tips
- Rottweilers have a denser undercoat than their short outer coat suggests — use an undercoat rake or rubber curry during seasonal shedding to pull out the loose undercoat before it ends up on your furniture.
- The skin folds around the face and neck on some Rottweilers can trap moisture; check and dry these areas after bathing and after the dog drinks water from a bowl.
- Ear cleaning should be done monthly at minimum — while not as prone to ear infections as floppy-eared breeds, Rottweilers can accumulate dark ear wax that, if left unchecked, creates an environment for yeast growth.
- Nail maintenance is critical for a heavy breed like the Rottweiler; overgrown nails alter their gait and put excess pressure on joints, so trim or grind nails every 3-4 weeks.
- Bathing a large Rottweiler requires thorough rinsing — residual shampoo trapped under the dense coat can cause skin irritation and hot spots, so rinse until the water runs completely clear.
