The Norwich Terrier is nearly identical to the Norfolk Terrier in body and coat, differing primarily in ear carriage — the Norwich has erect, prick ears while the Norfolk has folded, drop ears. The coat is hard, wiry, and straight, lying close to the body and requiring hand stripping to maintain the correct terrier texture for the show ring.

- The prick ears of the Norwich are a key distinguishing feature — keep the ear edges tidy with scissors but never alter the natural erect carriage.
- Hand stripping 2-3 times per year maintains the wiry coat and the distinctive deep red, grizzle, or black-and-tan coloring of the breed.
- Clipping softens the coat irreversibly and may also mute the depth of the coat's coloring — hand strip if color is a priority.
- Brush weekly between strip sessions with a slicker brush to remove dead undercoat and keep the coat lying flat.
- The terrier's naturally water-resistant coat should not be bathed too frequently — every 4-6 weeks or when visibly dirty.
- Despite the harsh outer coat, the undercoat is soft — thorough brushing is needed to remove loose undercoat between appointments.
