Care Tips
- The Miniature American Shepherd has the coat demands of a full-size herding breed in a smaller body — do not underestimate the grooming commitment. Brush at least three times per week to prevent the undercoat from matting at the skin.
- The feathering behind the ears and in the armpits is the first area to mat — focus brushing on these spots daily and use a metal comb as a final check after brushing to confirm full penetration to the skin.
- The breed is very active and often works in tall grass and scrubby terrain; check the feathering on the legs and the paw tufts after every outdoor session for burrs, seeds, and plant debris that quickly work into mats.
- During the twice-yearly coat blow, daily brushing is necessary to manage the volume of loose undercoat. A professional de-shedding appointment at the start of the blow is the most effective way to accelerate the process.
