Care Tips
- The mane and frill are the most mat-prone areas on a Leonberger — brush these regions daily if keeping the coat long, focusing particularly where the mane meets the neck and where the collar sits.
- Line brush the mane and body coat in horizontal sections from skin outward; the coat is dense enough that surface brushing with a slicker skims the outer coat while leaving the undercoat ungroomed below.
- Leonbergers are heat-sensitive giants — keep grooming sessions cool, offer water frequently, and watch for signs of overheating such as excessive panting or weakness, especially when blow-drying the dense coat.
- Never shave this double coat; the undercoat and guard hairs regulate body temperature in both summer and winter. The Leonberger's large body mass makes heat management critical, and the coat's insulation helps with this.
- Check the paws and inter-digital hair regularly — Leonberger paw furnishings are profuse and pick up debris, snowballs in winter, and seeds in summer. Trim inter-digital hair every 3-4 weeks and apply paw balm seasonally.
