The Kuvasz is a large, ancient Hungarian livestock guardian with a striking, pure white double coat that is medium to long in length with a slightly wavy texture. The coat is odorless and has natural self-cleaning properties that cause dried mud to flake off as the coat dries. Care Tips
- Allow dried mud and surface dirt to dry on the coat before brushing it out — the Kuvasz's naturally wavy coat causes dried mud to fall free when brushed, making frequent bathing unnecessary for a working guardian dog.
- Use a whitening shampoo at every professional bath to maintain the coat's pure white appearance and prevent the yellowing that occurs from outdoor environmental exposure.
- During seasonal coat blows, brush daily with an undercoat rake — the sheer volume of undercoat the Kuvasz produces during these periods can cause the loose coat to mat against the skin if sessions are skipped.
- Never shave the double coat; the white outer coat reflects solar radiation and protects the skin from sunburn, and shaving eliminates this protection while potentially causing permanent coat texture changes.
- Line brush using horizontal sections from the bottom of the dog upward — the Kuvasz coat is dense enough that surface brushing leaves the undercoat fully intact below the outer guard hairs.
