- Bathing a Great Dane often requires a walk-in shower or outdoor setup — plan for the logistics early and train the puppy to accept bathing before they reach 100+ pounds.
- Great Danes drool significantly, and dried saliva can build up in the facial folds and jowls; wipe the face and jowls with a damp cloth after meals and check for skin irritation in those areas.
- The Dane's thin single coat provides very little insulation; bathe in a warm environment, dry thoroughly immediately after the bath, and keep the dog warm during and after grooming.
- Despite minimal coat grooming needs, nail care is critical — Great Danes are heavy dogs and overgrown nails place enormous stress on the joints; trim or grind every 3-4 weeks and start this habit when they are puppies.
