Care Tips
- German Shepherds shed year-round and blow coat twice yearly — during peak shedding, brush with an undercoat rake every single day to stay ahead of the loose fur volume.
- Use a high-velocity dryer after bathing to blow out the undercoat before brushing; this alone can remove as much loose fur as 30 minutes of raking and dramatically reduces grooming time.
- Never shave a German Shepherd's double coat — the coat provides thermal regulation and UV protection, and many GSDs experience abnormal coat regrowth called post-clipping alopecia after shaving.
- Long-coat German Shepherds (a recognized coat variety) need brushing 3-4 times per week and are more prone to matting behind the ears and in the chest feathering.
- Check the ears weekly using a veterinarian-approved ear cleaner — while not floppy, the GSD's large, upright ears can still accumulate debris and dirt, especially in working dogs.
