Chinese Shar-Pei
The Chinese Shar-Pei is one of the most distinctive dogs in the world, recognized by its extreme skin wrinkling and either a very short 'horse coat' or a slightly longer 'brush coat.' The short coat itself is easy to care for, but the breed's deep skin folds require diligent daily cleaning and drying to prevent the painful skin fold infections (pyoderma) to which the breed is highly prone.

Care Tips
- Clean every skin fold — including facial folds, neck folds, tail pocket, and body wrinkles — at least every other day using a dry, unscented baby wipe or lint-free cloth. Trapped moisture, bacteria, and yeast in the folds are the leading cause of skin disease in this breed.
- After cleaning any fold, always dry the interior completely. Leaving even slight moisture in the folds creates conditions for rapid bacterial and yeast overgrowth that can progress to painful, malodorous infections within 24 hours.
- The 'tail pocket' (the deep fold beneath the tail where it meets the body) is often overlooked and is a common site for severe pyoderma — include it in every cleaning session.
- The horse coat variety's very short, harsh bristles cause the coat to stand upright when brushed against the grain, which can irritate the skin — always brush or stroke in the direction of hair growth.
- Shar-Pei puppies have far more wrinkles than adults and are at the highest risk of fold infections; establish a daily cleaning routine from the first day the puppy comes home, before any infections develop.
