The Chesapeake Bay Retriever — the 'Chessie' — is the toughest and most weather-resistant of the retriever family, purpose-bred for hunting waterfowl in the freezing, rough waters of Chesapeake Bay. Their coat is their most distinctive feature: a short, harsh, wavy outer coat over a thick, oily, wool-like undercoat that is almost entirely water-repellent. The coat's natural oils give it a characteristic slightly musty smell that is normal for the breed, but requires a specific approach to bathing to preserve the water-resistant properties.

Cuts & Styles
A thorough bath with a mild, coat-preserving shampoo (never a heavy degreaser), blow-dry, and a slicker brush or rubber curry brush-through to remove loose undercoat. The oily coat should not be stripped of its natural oils, which are essential to its water-repellent function.
A de-shedding bath using a gentle de-shedding formula, followed by thorough blow-drying and undercoat raking, to remove the seasonal undercoat blowout. Essential during spring and fall when the dense wool undercoat sheds significantly.
A quick rinse bath after hunting or water activity to remove mud, saltwater, and debris, followed by towel-drying and a brief brush-through. The Chessie's oily coat means they air-dry faster than most double-coated breeds, but thorough drying reduces skin irritation under the dense undercoat.
