- Cavalier ear feathering is particularly prone to matting behind the ear leather where the long silky hair rubs against the neck — brush this area daily with a pin brush to prevent tangles before they become mats.
- Clean the long ear feathering after every meal if the dog's ears dip into the food or water bowl; a feeding snood or elevated bowl can prevent the ears from becoming chronically dirty and matted.
- The feet should be rounded and neat — carefully trim the hair around and between the paw pads every few weeks to prevent debris accumulation and to maintain the breed's characteristic compact foot shape.
- Cavaliers are prone to mitral valve disease, a heart condition common in the breed; while this does not directly affect grooming, be mindful of exercise and stress during groom sessions, especially for older dogs.
