The Briard is a large, elegant French herding and guard dog with an extraordinary long, slightly wavy, dry-textured outer coat that forms a natural part along the spine and falls evenly on both sides of the body. The undercoat is fine and tight, providing insulation, while the outer coat has a natural texture described as 'goat-like' — it repels water and dries quickly. - Daily brushing is not optional for a full-coated Briard — the dry, goat-like coat texture mats rapidly across the entire body when brushing is missed even for a few days. Part the coat along the spine and brush each side outward in sections.
- The face fall of the Briard covers the eyes, which is a breed characteristic — do not trim the eye fall unless it is causing corneal irritation. The breed's natural coat protects the eyes from debris in working conditions.
- The undercoat is fine and tight but still mats — use a wide-tooth comb after brushing with a pin brush to confirm you have reached the skin, particularly in the armpits and inner thighs where friction causes the fastest mat formation.
- The Briard's coat has a natural, slightly dry texture that differs from silky or fluffy coats; avoid conditioning products that soften the coat texture, which would change its characteristic 'dry' quality.
- Professional grooming every 4-6 weeks is a minimum commitment for this breed. Owners who do not brush at home daily should consider a shorter pet clip, as a neglected full Briard coat can require sedation for humane mat removal.
