The Barbet is an ancient French water dog whose name means 'beard' in French — a reference to the breed's characteristic beard and curly, woolly coat. An ancestor of both the Poodle and the Briard, the Barbet has a profuse, curly, waterproof coat that forms long, soft, wooly curls across the entire body.
