The Akita is a large, powerful Japanese spitz-type dog with a thick, plush double coat that provided protection in the snowy mountains of northern Japan. Care Tips
- Never shave an Akita's double coat. The undercoat and guard hairs work together to insulate the dog from both heat and cold — shaving eliminates this thermoregulatory system and the coat may return with a permanently altered texture, sometimes called post-clipping alopecia.
- During the two to three week coat blow that occurs twice yearly, brush the Akita every single day with an undercoat rake followed by a slicker brush. Skipping sessions during this period results in dense undercoat mats that are painful and time-consuming to remove.
- The Akita has a naturally clean coat with low odor; bathing more than once every six to eight weeks strips the guard hairs of their water-repellent properties and dries out the skin.
- Always use a high-velocity dryer after bathing — the coat is too dense for air or towel drying, and moisture trapped in the undercoat leads to hot spots and skin infections within a day.
- Check under the thick neck ruff and in the armpits where friction prevents good air circulation and where mats are most likely to form even between heavy shedding seasons.
