Best Tools for Double Coats
Golden Retrievers, Huskies, German Shepherds, and other double-coated breeds need undercoat rakes and deshedding tools — never shave the coat.
Double coats have a soft undercoat beneath weather-resistant guard hairs. During shedding season, dead undercoat packs against the skin and causes hot spots and mats. An undercoat rake or deshedding tool removes loose fur without cutting guard hairs.
- Never shave a double coat — it damages the coat cycle and increases mat risk.
- Brush 2–3× weekly; daily during spring and fall blow-outs.
