The process of carefully removing mats and tangles from the coat using specialized tools such as dematting combs, mat splitters, or detangling sprays. Dematting must be done methodically — splitting large mats into smaller sections before working through each piece to avoid pulling on the skin.
When performed correctly, dematting can save a coat that would otherwise require a full shave-down. However, groomers must assess each mat individually — mats that are too tight, too close to the skin, or covering a large area should be shaved for the animal's comfort and safety.
Apply a detangling or conditioning spray to the mat and allow it to penetrate for 60 seconds before attempting removal. This lubricates the hair shaft and significantly reduces the pulling force needed.
